--The state-recognised degree programme at the Frankfurter Akademie concludes with a state examination to become a 'State-certified Communications Designer'.
The qualification 'State-certified Communications Designer' is equivalent to a Bachelor's degree. According to the definition of the 'European and German Qualifications Framework EQF/DQR' of 31 January 2012, the qualifications 'State-certified Communications Designer' and 'Bachelor' are both assigned to level 6 (out of 8).
The difference between a bachelor's degree and an examination-based degree. Unlike a pure bachelor's degree, a exam qualifies you for direct entry into the profession.
Due to its formal equivalence to a bachelor's degree, the qualification 'Staatlich geprüfte Kommunikationsdesignerin' (state-certified communication designer), as awarded by the Academy of Visual Arts, Frankfurt, is generally considered a prerequisite for applying to a master's programme.
The qualification 'Staatlich geprüfte:r Kommunikationsdesigner:in', which is only awarded in Germany, is recognised worldwide.
Due to the specific education system in Germany - the distinction between vocational training, a master's degree in a skilled trade, and bachelor's and master's degrees - some universities are not yet aware that the examination course and the bachelor's degree are formally equivalent in terms of the admission requirements for applying to a master's programme.
The following requirements must be met in order to apply for a place on a Master's programme:
1. Successful completion of the examination or bachelor's degree (some postgraduate programmes require a final grade of 'very good / passed with distinction').
2. Proof that the required CP (according to ECTS) have been achieved. Accordingly, a list of CP earned during the course of study and the corresponding module handbook must be submitted with the application.
3. A portfolio of work related to the chosen Master's programme (e.g. Master in Typography, Master in Film, Master in Cultural Studies, etc.).
4. Work experience related to the chosen Master's programme is not required, but is highly advantageous for a successful application.
In general, a Master's degree in Communication Design is only useful in terms of career development if the applicant has a clear idea of which of the many areas of design he or she wishes to specialise in.
The best way to ensure a stable professional future is to gain as much practical experience as possible after graduation and then apply to a master's programme on the basis of that experience. The professionally orientated studies at the Academy of Visual Arts in Frankfurt, for example, offers the best conditions for this.
